Supplements can have a very powerful effect on your health but only when taken in a way that focuses on your personal needs! Consistency when it comes to supplements is also essential. Taking your supplements consistently on a daily basis as directed will give you the best chance of seeing results.
These are some of the key reasons why you should be taking supplements that are tailored to your specific needs:
1.We all have unique needs
What your body requires compared to what your dad or your best friend needs will be different. Our needs also change at different times in our life e.g. during/after illness, pregnancy, old age etc. as well as at different times throughout the year, e.g. everyone living in the northern hemisphere should supplement with vitamin D in the winter months.
By taking supplements that are tailored to your individual needs, you know you’re giving your body a boost of what it really needs at that time.
2. Your supplements should be targeting your personal health goals
Supplements shouldn’t be taken aimlessly, you should be taking them for a specific reason. For example, you may be taking a digestive enzyme supplement to work on reducing bloating after eating as this symptom may be bothering you. If you are not experiencing digestive discomfort or other related symptoms, there is likely no reason for you to be taking a digestive enzyme!
When we ask clients why they are taking particular supplements, we often get an answer that goes something like; “Oh, I just saw this one advertised and my friend said it was good so I thought I’d give it a try”.
While most ‘general health’ supplements such as a multivitamin likely won’t cause you any harm, you may not see any real benefit from taking it if it’s not aligned with your personal needs.
3. It will save you money!
Good quality supplements can be expensive so, only taking the supplements you actually need can actually be more gentle on your pocket!
By knowing the specific nutrients you may benefit from supplementing with, it may stop you from taking supplements that you don’t need.
4. Your health conditions need to be taken into consideration
Certain health conditions may require an individual to supplement with a certain nutrient. For example, zinc and inositol are two very impactful supplements for managing the symptoms of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) but, someone without this condition may not have a need to supplement with these nutrients.
Similarly, if you are taking certain medications, it’s important to ensure there are no negative interactions between the supplements you are taking and your medications as some ingredients can interact with each other and reduce the efficacy or potentially cause negative side effects.
5. Our diets and lifestyles are different
Supplements may be needed to fix nutritional deficiencies from the diet, for example, those who follow a vegan or vegetarian diet may find it challenging to get sufficient levels of nutrients such as iron, B12 and omega 3 fatty acids - this is where tailored supplements can come in to fill these gaps.
From our Nutrition clinical practice, working with hundreds of clients over the years, we understand the benefit that taking tailored, high quality supplements can have on an individual's health.
We also understand that it can be very difficult to know what supplements are right for your individual needs, this is why we set up Your Wellness Collective and created our Personalised Supplement Plan service!
